There is a simple solution for this. An application is called K4DirStat.
Firstly install it with use of Ubuntu Software Centre:
and next find it via HUD:
Once started you have to choose the directory which is to be analysed:
and click OK.
Then the following window with the graphical representation of the files and directories will be shown.
Very useful to determine which files are not necessary any more and take a lot of hdd space:
